"**Strengthening cross-border trade as a vehicle for greater understanding and interdependence between divided communities across borders.**"
We are looking for an exceptional candidate to join our DRC team, Alert’s largest country programme. This is a project manager position of the four-year project, Mupaka Shamba Letu (The border, our Livelihood) – the largest in our DRC portfolio, which aims to contribute to peace through women’s economic empowerment (small-scale cross-border trade).
The key problem that the Mupaka Shamba Letu project seeks to address is the lack of social cohesion and trust among border communities between DRC, Rwanda and Burundi. In so doing, it addresses the exclusion of women small-scale cross-border traders from different backgrounds from decision-making on regional issues contributing to peace and security that affect them. The project builds on the successes that Alert has had under its previous Tushiriki Wote project. The project aims to contribute to more inclusive community relations across borders in the Great Lakes region, improved cooperation and a more sustainable peace in Rwanda, DRC and Burundi. It is implemented in partnership with civil society actors in DRC, Rwanda and Burundi.
As Project Manager, you will be responsible for the timely and effective implementation of the project through the establishment of adapted mechanisms and procedures, and the leadership of the project team. You will ensure coordination and synergy across local implementing partners (a total of seven local partners across the three countries and in two provinces in DRC), contributing to maximising the overall impact of project activities. In collaboration with other project staff and with relevant Alert personnel, you will be responsible for developing, monitoring and overseeing the implementation of a project advocacy and networking strategy. You will be responsible for monitoring progress and impact, and reporting on it. And you will be responsible for nurturing a close collaboration and relationship with the donor. As a senior member of the DRC team, you may also be requested to take leadership and representation responsibilities as necessary.
We believe all individuals are talented and success comes from matching the right talents to the right roles. For this role, the skills, qualifications and experience listed below are important, but we believe that to be great in this job you are likely, first and foremost, to have a talent for working effectively in complex, politically charged, unstable environments, and across different cultures. You will be professionally credible based on your extensive experience and deep knowledge of the issues at stake and able to communicate effectively with a wide range of actors working on conflict management, social cohesion and development programmes. You will be incredibly well organised and detail-orientated, but also able to step back and see the bigger picture.
Among the essential qualifications required for this position, you must have a wide experience in the implementation of complex development or peacebuilding programmes in DRC or in similar contexts. Substantial experience in the management of NGO projects is essential. This implies having been responsible for the management of contracts and relationships with partners, and to have a proven experience of remote personnel management. In addition, we are looking for a women's economic empowerment specialist, with extensive knowledge on issues such as masculinity and gender and conflict-sensitive approaches.
In addition, experience of developing and nurturing constructive relationships with local partners (governmental and non-governmental) is essential as well as an excellent working knowledge (spoken and written) of both French and English.
