Background
African Parks Congo (APC), a non-profit conservation organization, is directly responsible for the management and long-term rehabilitation of the Garamba National Park, in partnership with the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN).
Garamba National Park (GNP) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the province of Haut-Uélé, and shares its northern border with South Sudan.
The park has been under extreme pressure and has faced various challenges over the years. Various armed groups (including the LRA) and professional poachers are taking advantage of the instability provoked by regional conflicts to penetrate the interior of the park and slaughter the animals in groups, mainly elephants to obtain ivory.
Currently, the Garamba National Park has about 500 employees in its workforce, from several nationalities (African, American and European).
In order to ensure good communication and cohesion of the workforce, African Parks seeks to recruit a Volunteer Instructor able to teach English which is a second working language. The Volunteer Instructor will also provide French lessons for English speaking expatriates.
Overview of the job
The Volunteer Instructor will provide exceptional and accelerated quality teaching for 3 months; it will mainly teach administrative managers and all department heads and tourism service agents. He will organize his schedule according to his methodology in order to raise the level of his audience in record time.
Main responsibilities
- Provide English teaching to the Francophone staff of the Garamba National Park;
- Provide French teaching to the Anglophone staff of the Garamba National Park;
- Produce and make available a syllabus containing the subject to be taught and meeting the needs of the staff to be trained;
- Identify an appropriate methodology for teaching courses and adapt them to the students' needs;
- Periodically organize the sessions of oral or practical evaluations of the courses to the students (staffs);
- In addition to the teaching of the language (vocabulary, grammar, spelling, conjugation, etc.),
- the Instructor prepares the students to communicate in specific situations, in writing or orally;
- Ensure that learners can read and guess the meaning of a word through context or research dictionary but also actually communicate in complacency;
- Use various teaching tools and offer exercises (complete sentences and incomplete texts, listening comprehension, watching movies, role-playing, etc.) and interesting activities (visits, language exchanges, etc.) in order to capture attention and encourage learning;
- Prepare and give lessons, create adapted exercises;
Capacities,skills and experience required
- Pedagogical ability in French or English;
- To know how to adapt pedagogy and style to each learner and to each situation. ;
- Master the languages to be taught, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to integrate into a multicultural group;
- Master group facilitation and management techniques;
- To be open and receptive to feedback;
- To hold a Baccalaureate +5 (BAC+5) or equivalent;
- Encourage learners;
- Know how to set group learning objectives in the short or long term while respecting individual levels;

Condition of work
African Parks Congo will cover travel expenses to and from GNP in the DRC, and will provide the volunteer with food and accommodation on site for three months. A performance allowance may be awarded at the discretion of African Parks, according to the level of satisfaction with key performance indicators.
